Your baby might just want some company.  When we got our first ferret, he
used to pull on the bars of his cage with his teeth when we put him away.
As soon as we got him a buddy, he was fine.  Two aren't much more difficult
to care for.  I think it's easier, because they amuse each other and don't
drive you crazy (much).  In my opinion, when you have more ferrets than you
have hands, you are asking for it.  Two is very manageable.  I have 4
ferrets at the moment.  (So, do as I say not as I do...)
 
Seriously, I think Gabby is just bored and a friend would make him happy.
