It sure sounds like you're talking about salmonella.  A large percentage of
the reptiles in zoos, etc., carry it for some reason.  It is dangerous to
people and I would imagine (though I don't know for certain) to ferrets too,
since it's a bacteria that causes icky food poisoning-like gastrointestinal
symptoms... If you touched the iguana and then the ferret kissed your hand,
for example, you could easily transmit it.
