I use two Midwest Cages in the shelter. One I have taken all the ramps and shelves out of, and the other has the bottom ramp and shelf only. In both we have four hammocks (including several very large ones, and some double deckers) strung up which go back and forth in an alternating pattern so that even if a ferret was to fall from one, they would softly land in another less than a foot below. We don't hang any hammocks higher than about halfway up the cage. In the cage with the younger ferrets, they climb the walls and then purposely fall (jump?) off into the hammocks below. Not only do they entertain themselves, but us humans as well LOL! In the cage with the seniors, they all have their favorite sleeping spots, and the hammocks are a little lower and easier to get from one to another (only a couple inches in height seperate each, and they all overlap. We have never had a ferret manage to escape from a Midwest Cage, and have housed at least 30 ferrets in them over the past couple pf years, including some that could escape from just about anything else. It would require at leat two ferrets working together in perfect synch to be able to open the doors on these cages, and the way the sleves and ramps are arranged, the heights are just not right for them to be able to do this either. I just want to say what a great time we had at the Cincy ferret show again this year! It was great to put faces to names! The sponsors put on a well run show that was laods of fun! -Anne [Posted in FML issue 2427]
