Mr. Lipinski points out that needles can be sterilized in several ways.
What he fails to mention is that many states and municipalities have laws
governing the disposal of medical waste, particularly syringes and needles.
In my town needles may not be thrown out with the trash, period.  They
absolutely must be in a secure container appropriately labeled as medical
waste, even if they were never used!  I would guess that this is likely the
law in the majority of municipalities.  Even if it not the law in your
neighborhood, I urge you to dispose of needles and syringes as medical
waste, rather than simply throwing them out in the trash.
