"Stove Chow" and other wood stove pellets are hardwoods.  They are darker
for that reason.  By being hardwoods they do not have any of the oils from
cedar or pine that could cause problems.  Pine and other evergreen woods
are not very good for burning in wood stoves because the oils generate
creosote problems, manufacturers wouldn't add the problems of evergreen
woods to a product intended for burning.  That effectively makes them
safer for ferrets.
