I'm sure I'm probably the 20th person to report this, since I haven't been good about keeping up with the FML lately. Tonight on Emergency Vets on Animal Planet there was a ferret. He was a big sable, with a lovely almost pure-white undercoat. The poor guy had ripped out one of his front toenails, then proceeded to lick at it until it was raw. Well, they shaved the fur off the toe, and cleaned him up. Then, here's the great part, they made an Elizabethan Collar for him out of x-ray film. They made a great production out of showing how the doctor fashioned it. They fastened it on with gauze around the neck and then looped it around his chest behind the front paws. The doctors were rather pleased with themselves. Of course I was just laughing, "Yeah, right. It MIGHT stay on... for 10 seconds." In any case, he was a lovely boy. And it was comical to see a ferret in an E-collar. Especially since he wasn't too seriously injured. I usually don't watch Emergency Vets. Almost every show I've seen they've had to put an animal down. That's not my idea of a relaxing evening in front of the TV. So, I don't know if this has been shown before, or how often they do reruns of the same show. This show had a long segment doing an ultrasound on a puppy's heart immediately before the ferret segment. His name was Zeus, and I would guess he is a German Shepherd. As a side note with no ferret content, if you caught the Animal Doctor episode with the obese Corgi prior to this show, you might be interested in checking out the Corgi we are currently fostering to her get down to adoptable weight. She's of a comparable weight to the one on TV (about 3x what she should be), although at only 2 years old, she appears to be in better shape than him. http://www.voicenet.com/~geos/reba.html If you know anyone who is letting their pets' weight get out of control, please show them this page so they understand what their "love" is doing to their pet. OK, to give it some ferret content, we introduced her to our ferrets, Popcorn and Graham, a few days ago, since it looks like she'll be with us a while. The intro went perfectly. Just some interest on both sides, but no aggression at all. So, she now has 2 ferrets to follow around for exercise. :) - Nancy [Posted in FML issue 2382]
