You can use clove oil for now for the pain-put a drop on a q-tip and apply directly to the broken part. It's both a powerful antiseptic and anesthetic as well. Clove oil is in almost everything dentists use-that's what you smell when you go into a dentists office. Don't be put off by the horrid sounding warnings if you see them on the vial of clove oil-when I bought it I thought they handed me 'artificial' oil the warning was so dire! After doing some reading I found out that cloves are 25% oil, so I don't even know if 'fake' clove oil is something companies would bother with. I took Katie to a nearby veterinary dentist and the cost to have her broken tooth surgically removed was around $150 (don't have the receipt handy), the estimate was around $150-200. You can run her regular food thru a blender and add water to make mush. Offer her that along with her regular food and let her decide. Katie kept eating fine even when her tooth was infected-I only found out when I picked her up and went to clean her ears and she winced! So appitite is not necessarily an indicator that everything is OK. Don't use asprin (it thins the blood and she'll bleed more if she goes for surgery) or tylenol/acetominiphin-may cause liver damage. Try calling around to different area vets to see if there is a veterinary dentist in your area. HTH, Ilena Ayala= [Posted in FML issue 2373]
