Julie Stevens sez: >I have a question about Air Cleaners or Purifiers, does anyone use these >appliances for their ferret rooms? Do they help with the marvelous aroma >that our wonderful critters have? Don't get me wrong I love the smell, I >constantly stick my nose in their soft, precious coats and ears to get a >big sniff of the stuff :-) Yes! Before we had whole hobs (required another level of equipment all together) a regular HEPA air cleaner, made by Honeywell and available at a home supply store for about $100.00 did the trick. >Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way about it as I do, so I was >wondering if these machines help to take away the odor! I still can't convince my husband, who loves the 'Merry Three to the Second Power,' that the smell of ferret is just as wonderful to his clients who might visit for dinner as to me. The HEPA filter was adequete with the girls and the gibs until we had the level of odor associated with whole rutting hobs. Prior to having whole hobs, you could smell ferret if you were in the room with them, but not in other parts of the house, which worked well. The best solution (IMHO) was an ozone air purifier. Alpine makes a nice unit that looks like a bookshelf speaker, is well made and easily adjustable. I haven't bought it yet, but I've been in several homes with an Alpine air filters and more rutting hobs then I'll ever have here, and was really, really impressed. If I remember right, the Alpine was about $400.00. Oh yeah, Alpine salespeople will let you test it too. Sort of a 'puppy dog close' or perhaps the 'one more kit close' sales technique Ann [Posted in FML issue 2373]
