Hexane is a solvent. It causes central nervous system damage with prolonged exposure. It's probably the most common organic solvent, and some sources include paint thinner, spray adhesives, spray fixatives, rubber cement and rubber cement thinners, contact adhesives, cleaning and sanitizing agents, and naphthas. Also watch for art supplies, especially oil paints (hexane is frequently used as an oil solvent), photgraphy materials, anything used to dissolve grease or oil, or adhesives. It could also hang around in pockets long after use in a place with little or no ventilation, such as a basement. It probably wouldn't be in candles (was asked about this) because it is highly inflammable and you'd have a fun little fire on your hands if it was in the candle. Another fun way hexane can kill is forming a stable ring structure that is flat and can slip between base pairs in dna and cause cancer. Lovely material. Some info about hexane is at: http://www.emeraldcoast.com/government/emergency/chemical.htm Good luck. [Posted in FML issue 2323]
