The Killians write: There are far too many areas in the country where people are desperate to get ferrets. There are shelters that have waiting lists since they have more people wanting ferrets than they have ferrets! We'll stick to our belief that it is a distribution problem. Now I am not at all trying to be argumentative here, but, I think that this statement needs to be qualified. There are many shelters with waiting lists, I fully agree on that. Problem is, most of them want only younger ferrets with no health/behavior problems that can go individually. Many shelters that I know have few to no ferrets that meet this description. I can generally place the young healthy single ones quickly and easily locally. I even at times have a waiting list for them. But very, very few people want a ferret over four, or one who has a health or behavior problem, or a pair. That is where the problem lies. Lately the great majority of my turn-ins (for whatever reason) are cages with three or four ferrets who are age five and up with health issues. Those are the type of ferrets many shelters are full of. I think we can all agree on this. If anyone has any suggestions on how to handle this situation, I am listening... -Anne [Posted in FML issue 2250]
