Don't judge the treatment of ferrets in Spellsinger too harshly based just
on the early ones. There are a few evil ferrets in the series, but also a
lot of very nice mustelids. One's ability to overcome species stereotypes
also features fairly prominantly in the series.

The one series I do hate for this is the Redwall books from Brian Jacques.
Talking mice I can stand, but inherently evil ferrets just strains the
credibility of the books beyond the breaking point IMO. He even had a whole
book dedicated to the concept that a ferret raised by nice rodents would
still turn out evil in the end because it's just the way things are.
