>From: Judie Carr Bruno <[log in to unmask]> >Subject: California >Can someone bring me up to speed on the ferret laws in Calif. There is currently a bill in the state legislature AB363 which, if approved, would allow the licensing of ferrets for a period of time to fund a study to see if legalizing ferrets has any negative effect. Not the greatest bill, but we had to make some sacrafices in order to get it as far as we did in the legislature. AB363 is currently stalled in the Senate Appropriations Committee (it was placed in the Suspense File by the chair, Senator Patrick Johnston [he's anti-ferret legalization]). The legislature is now in recess, so the bill won't be heard until January 1998. But AB 363 won't be taken off of Suspense unless one or some of the Senators on the committee request it to be heard (in defiance of the chair). So what is needed is pressure from the constituants in the districts of these Committee members. You said you are in San Diego, so there is a chance you are in one of those Senators' districts. You should find out if you are in Sanator Dede Alpert's district or Senator David Kelley's district. If you are, you need to contact and encourage your senator to remove AB363 from the Suspense File. Polite letters, faxes, or e-mails are needed. If you can arrange a meeting, all the better. You can find all of this info and the legalization battle over the last couple of years on our website, Californians For Ferret Legalization= http://www.ferretnews.org You can write to us at [log in to unmask] if you have any other questions that our website doesn't answer. Hope that helps! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Scott Beisner ~ ~ [log in to unmask] ~ ~ Californians For Ferret Legalization ~ ~ http://www.ferretnews.org ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [Posted in FML issue 2128]
