I would just like to put in my .02 regarding my experience with adopting vs. purchasing a ferret. I purchased my first ferret from a pet store 7 years ago. Elie is a MF sweetie who is still with us after adrenal surgery and I love him dearly. My other three are adoptees; one came from a breeder at the age of one--she was only 1 lb and not big enough to breed so she was spayed and put up for adoption. The other two came from a shelter. I would just like to say that although Elie was of course an adorable baby my husband and I have had just as much fun and enjoyment from our rescues. Sometimes it takes a little more work and tlc to socialize them and correct bad habits, but it is well worth it. Rescues are not always cheaper (my last produced some hefty medical bills); however, those of you who are about to purchase their first, second, or whichever ferret might want to consider contacting all the local shelters first to see if you can't help them out by adopting one (or a few) of their 'orphans'. Many of them are sweet, healthy, gentle creatures just waiting for a new home. It doesn't take a hero to adopt a 'rescue' ferret, only a loving heart. For myself, I can't see purchasing a ferret again while there is such a tremendous need for adoptive homes. A postscript: For the lady in Baltimore County, MD looking for a ferret sitter between Xmas and New Years, I may be able to help out as I live there as well.
