On Tue, 14 Oct 1997, Sukie Crandall wrote to the FML about the rabies shedding studies sponsored by the Morris Animal Foundation: >Knowing the shedding times and possibilities for the common strains of >rabies will give ferret activists and their legislators the ammunition to >get quarantine times imposed instead of sacrifice ... In January of this year, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health instituted a 10-day quarantine policy for ferrets, regardless of vaccination history. MA had previously been a kill-and-test state. The MA-DPH made its decision based on the MAF-sponsored shedding studies completed to date. In our* dealings with them, they always said that they would base their policy on science--and when they had the science, they went with quarantine. These shedding studies have already helped to change policy and minds. -- Lee, one of the * Massachusetts Ferret Friends (the other MaFF) For ferret care and adoption info in Massachusetts, contact MaFF at (781) 224-1098 <[log in to unmask]> http://www.maferrets.org -- Lee [log in to unmask] [Posted in FML issue 2096]
