Hi all, I am proud to announce my first oficial rescue as a shelter. I saw an ad in the paper for a " free ferret" and called. A small female 2 yr old sable. So I set up a time and made the 6 1/2 round trip to get her. I had already been warned that she was a nipper ! When I got there the lady had another ferret she was also looking to place and of course I couldn't turn down this sweet older ferret. the young one has cataracs, although she sees some motion i do not know how much. Other than having dirty ears and being shinny as a rail she seem to be ok. SHE is a BITER. I don't think she has ever been scuffed. She bites when you pick her up and if you scuff her and tell her no ,when you set her down she comes back to bite you anywhere she can and draws blood! This is her 2nd week her and she is improving. She has discovered treats and toys. The older ferret has been named LADY she is a darling. Lady was left in a cage with a male for quit sometime . All the hail is gone from her shoulders and neck and is full of cuts and bite marks. I was told she was 4 yrs. ( but looks closer to 5/6 ) She could barely walk across the kitchen floor when she got here. Her first 4 days were spent in the large she came home in , with the door opened so she could come & go as she pleased . She slept with her head in the food bowl, I,m sure her first time to have as much as she wanted to eat. and EAT SHE HAS! Her 2nd week here she has gained enough engery to begin to explore. I will have her spayed when the vet thinks she can survive the sugery ( at this time it is unlikely) and I will keep a watch ou for more hair loss she has a rough coat and a partically bald tail so adrenal disease is a possibalitly. She must have been a grand lady in her youth to still have such a sweet temperment! Both will become permanent residents of the shelter. If any of you have any information on cataracts in ferrets I would appreciate it. I wish some of the shelters that were full were closer. I have a waiting list of eighteen ( some willing to foster of take older ones) and space in the shelter for 28 . but not a ferret in this area needing to be placed. sincerely, vikki mick thieves haven blytheville arkansas [Posted in FML issue 2044]
