I'd like to thank Sheriece for her suggestion of adopting a ferret from a shelter as a kind of tribute to Kodo. I know Sheriece mentioned the Oregon Ferret Shelter specifically, but there are a lot of shelters out there that have kids that need good homes as well, so please check the STAR listing of shelters for one in your area and give them a call. If you can't adopt another ferret right now, perhaps you could donate much needed supplies, money, or time in Kodo's memory. If you don't have web access, just email me and I'll look up the shelter nearest you on the STAR list. We at the OFA were saddened, shocked and outraged over what happened in Michigan. Michigan has an unyielding political and judicial system that operates to protect its own interests rather than those it should be serving. Public safety wasn't the issue - maintaining political control and unanimity were the real issues. I will be recommending that our members send mail to the Governor of Michigan, informing him that we will be boycotting all Michigan businesses until something is done to protect the rights of pet owners in his state. We don't use the FML much to announce what's going on at the shelter, because if all shelters did, the FML would become overrun with postings about shelter updates (the OFS alone places over 150 ferrets in homes each year). I'll break the rule and mention that the Oregon Ferret Shelter just took in 50 male ferrets from a "ferret mill". I'll be updating the OFS Adoption Focus web page to provide information on each new ferret this weekend.
