Several months ago I requested that people contact their state departments and find out how many ferrets are killed and tested for the past 10 years. Sadly, I only received 3 responses. This data can help us in our battle with the kill and test policy. Dr. Charles Rupprecht, CDC, is extremely interested in this data. Again I ask that you contact your state Epidemiology Dept and ask for the data - How many ferrets have been killed and tested for rabies and what were the results? WE need this on state dept letterhead. Once you receive the letter please forward it to me and I will compile the data and send it to Dr. R. When we show the numbers of ferrets that are being unwarrantedly killed and tested then perhaps CDC will make a statement or the Compendium Committee may change the wording in the Compendium. It's at least worth a try. PLEASE, contact your state epidemiologist dept. It only takes a phone call and/or letter. I can request the data but I believe the response will be better from someone in-state. Hugs to all. tle [Posted in FML issue 1932]
