The problem with that book (and movie) is the fact that they are portraying
a black-footed ferret, which *does* live in the prairies.  However, the
animators obviously missed somewhere because he ended up looking like a
cross between a squirrel and a fox.  He was originally in a zoo in the
show/book, but escaped.  The most unrealistic is the fact that he is not in
a breeding program, but we have to remember that the original book is
somewhat old.
 
I'm pretty sure the cartoon is rather old, too.  I taped it last year when
it was on TV before I even had my ferret.  It might have been made (the part
with Malcolm Jamal Warner) before ferrets were widely kept as pets.  What I
found mostly strange was that the live-action ferret was treated as a
black-footed ferret instead of a domesticated polecat.  I agree that it was
mega-confusing.
