Hello CA UPDATE Folks, This message from Jan says it all. For those of you not knowing what to do, he spells it out pretty plainly, and it's clear what our job is-- to spread the truth about the ferret, meet now with our Assemblymembers, and call local radio, TV and newspapers. If anyone doesn't have Jan's editorial, please e-mail me and I'll send it to you. Please, schedule those meetings with your Assemblymembers, especially if they are new. Please let me know if you are scheduling a meeting with your Assemblymember so I can send others with you, or make sure you have what you need in terms of ferret information. I don't want to be sending copies of this information to more than one person in a district, so let's coordinate on this. Please call me if you're willing to meet with your Assemblymember. We have just been given the green light so please, let's get going on all of the fronts Jan mentioned. Jeanne Carley Californians for Ferret Legalization --------------------- Forwarded message: From: [log in to unmask] (Assemblyman Jan Goldsmith) To: [log in to unmask] Date: 97-02-04 21:34:16 EST Jeanne: I had an opportunity to visit your web site and found it to be excellent! It is now time for supporters to schedule meetings with their Assembly representatives. Over 1/2 of the Assembly consists of new members, most of whom are not familiar with ferrets. They need to be educated and their questions need to be addressed. Otherwise, they will be easy prey for the Department of Fish and Game. We have a chance of winning this year if we keep communicating. People need to get on talk shows, distribute to newspapers the commentary I wrote (which you have reproduced in this web site) and write letters to the editor. Three years ago, a group of constituents asked me to carry legislation to legalize ferrets. At the time, I did not know what a ferret is. I responded that, if they could convince me that they are right, I will go to bat for them. They inundated me with information and I concluded they were right. Three years later, I am still making good on that commitment. And, I don't mind. The fact is, you are right. You will win this issue by communicating. Everyone who visits this web site should write a letter to the editor, send out the commentary and, perhaps, call a talk radio show. In addition, they need to write their Assembly representative, call their representative and, if possible, meet with their representative. Make sure their representative has read the Pacific Research Institute report that was distributed. We can get them another copy if they need one. We will soon have a bill number and anticipate the first hearing on the bill will occur sometime in late March or early April. We will, of course, keep you apprised. Best wishes.
