Now that Dors and Seldon are middle-aged ferrets, they don't dig at the carpet very often. A technique I now use successfully to remind them not to dig is to nail a few well placed nails into the carpet in the corners of a few doorways, and that suffices. The heads of the nails stick up about half an inch, buried in the carpet, and that is enough. You might try it if you have units who only occasionally need to be reminded not to dig. For more avid diggers (like young ferrets seem to be), chicken wire, rectangular mesh, or office runner stapled into the carpet near the doorway seems to work well, as noted in the FAQ.
