I have been reading with interest the talk about legalizing ferrets in California. I have a few points I think are valid on the topic. In New Zealand ferrets, stoats and weasels were released in great numbers to control the rabbits (another introduced animal). This would appear a good idea but someone didn't tell the animals not to eat other animals as well. Now we are faced with trying to prevent the sustained impact these mustelids have on our native wildlife, they have contributed to the extinction of several species and continue to push others to the brink. We are also discovering new problems, a possible link between Tb in ferrets and cattle. Despite all our problems we still have ferret farms, a continuing demand for ferrets as pets maintains them. Escapes do happen. I have heard of people releasing ferrets into 'the wild' as they can no longer care for them. Ferrets do not belong in our "wild". Before people discuss legalizing ferrets for their entertainment they should consider that some may escape, and they may form a feral population (as cats did here). Learn from our mistakes ! I think ferrets are great animals, and we are getting a pet one (sterilised). If ferrets won't impact on your environment, get them, but be careful. Hope you have found this relevant.
