Petey and Clyde both had large adrenals removed. I have two more to add to my collection for "Frankenferret". People were teasing me about my collecting parts and so I just told them they were for my creation - Frankenferret. :-) When I talked with Dr. Snyder about Petey he thought it would just be an exploratory because Petey wasn't showing typical signs. He had slight hair loss on a small section on the top of his head and the back of his feet were bare. He also had a muskier scent and was being more ummm.... manly with the other ferrets. When Larry went in he didn't find anything so he checked the bladder and when all was fine there went back to double check the adrenals. He got out the gauze and moved EVERYTHING out of the way and sure enough there was the diseased adrenal, a big one too. READ THIS - During surgery both boys vomited. I did as I normally do before surgery, fed them and took all food away at 4:00 a.m. which would be 5 hours before surgery. The ferrets were tubed but Petey may have aspirated. Dr. Snyder was very concerned. Petey is on Amoxi for the next 10 days. He is doing well, no wheezing, coughing or runny nose or eyes. BUT this experience has caused me to want to change my presurgery feeding schedule. I don't understand why, when the digestive process is suppose to be 3-4 hours in ferrets, there was food still in their tummies (both boys had full tummies) 5 hours later. Vets? I need answers from vets to pass on to my vet on how many hours before surgery food and water should be taken away from ferrets. Larry wants me to take their food away at 10 pm but from everything I've read and heard that is too long. He will listen to ferret knowledgeable vets so please respond so I can forward your posts to him. Ferry's adrenal surgery will be on Sept 3rd. Please keep the boys and Ferry in your thoughts and prayers. Hugs to all. tle [Posted in FML issue 1670]
