Those of you who have followed the troubled saga of efforts to reintroduce
the Black-Footed Ferret can find on the Web now an outstanding article by
Andy Abate recapping the entire sad history of this almost-doomed species
from the Pleistocene forward. Titled "The Black-footed Ferret: A Natural
and Unnatural History,'" it was written by one of the two people who lost
their jobs at the Pueblo Preconditioning Center when the USFWS decided last
year to release 14 "geriatric" ferrets into the wild. It is probably the
definitive study to date on what's wrong and what's right with the
reintroduction program.
