THE ADVICE DISPENSED BY MYSELF IN REFERENCE TO FML POSTINGS IS NOT MEANT TO SUPPLANT THE ADVICE OF VETERINARIANS WHO ARE IN CHARGE OF THE PATIENT. IF THE PATIENT IS NOT CURRENTLY UNDER THE CARE OF A VETERINARIAN, THE CLIENT IS RECOMMENDED TO TAKE THEIR FERRET TO ONE. >From: Tillie Evers <[log in to unmask]> >Subject: Rabies Shots! >Hey, I keep seeing people on FML mentioning Rabies Vac. for their Fuzzies. >I live in Central Oregon, and I wanted to be a good Mom, so when I first When one talks about approved vaccines, you need to realize there are a few different definitions you are working with. 1) IMRAB3 by Rhone Merieux is federally approved for use as a one year vaccine in ferrets. It has been approved for quite a few years. 2) The definition of State approval of IMRAB3 by the State of Oregan may be different. Here in New Hampshire, the State defines as a State approved vaccine any vaccine that has been federally approved. We also have the pleasure of having a rabies law that accepts this fact and allows for a quarantine period for an appropriately vaccinated ferret if he/she bites someone. Oregan may not consider IMRAB3 to be a State approved Rabies vaccine so your vet is correct for the State of Oregan. So you need to find out if 1) your vet just was not aware of IMRAB3 or 2) Oregan does not consider IMRAB3 to be state approved. I am sure someone on the FML will know the Oregan answers.
