Normally, you don't smell an abscess without seeing one that has ruputred
and drained.  I suggest, that the gland may not have been removed and is
still functional.  I am not familiar with the splaying of the legs being a
sign of pain, and many of my ferrets do it when picked up and rolled on
their back....
