I am at my wits end and my heart is breaking too. I am so grateful for the FML and the people who care so much for ferrets. I am hoping the doctors and FML readers can give me some ideas on where to go on my problem. Weezul is my 3 yr. old spayed & descented female ferret. In January of this year I noticed hair loss on her tail which spread to her body. I immediately thought adrenal disease and was certain when her vulva became swollen. Weezul had exploratory surgery on 2-7-95 and ovarian tissue was found. Two weeks went by and still swollen vulva. All this time Weezul is exhibiting "mothering" behavior. She licks her sister all the time and grabs her by the scruff of the neck and tries to drag her. Also the surgery has shown both the adrenals are normal. Blood tests were done on 2-27 and everything is normal. RBC is normal, was concerned about this because of aplastic anemia. My vet has no more suggestions so I search for a another opinion. I contacted Pam Grant of STAR ferrets and she was very helpful...Thanks Pam for your help...She suggested putting Weezul with a unaltered male which I did for about 4 days, but no improvement in Weezul, still swollen vulva, dry flaking itchy skin and more hair loss on body. I contacted another vet for a second opinion and was referred to a surgeon specialist. Skin tests and blood test for estrogen was done. Weezul had a estrogen reading of 15 and I was told anything over 10 is high. On 4-25 Weezul had another exploratory surgery and uterine horns were removed and the adrenals still looked normal! A path was done on the uterine tissue and was found that they were not excreting estrogen. On 5-12 Weezul received an HCG shot and on 5-22 she will receive a second shot because she still is not responding. Where do I go from here? I am so sorry this post is so long but I have no more answers and my vet is lost also. I keep questioning the adrenals and have suggested my vet do the blood test described by Dr. Wlliams for cases such as mine but the adrenals have been viewd by 2 good surgeons and they say they are normal. My sympathies to all who have lost loved ones. Last year was a very difficult year for I lost 6 of my furries. You never forget them, each one is so very special. Thank you for any suggestions.
