Actually, futon couches aren't all that expensive, if you buy them used
(and they're very durable, so they're generally in good shape).  I see from
your address that you're at Carnegie Mellon?  There might be a "for sale"
segment on your local internet news.  That's how I got my futon couch for
$150.  It's really nice, and serves as an excellent guest bed.  You could
also try any of those want-ad magazines, especially if you're living in a
high student-density area.
 
Honestly, now that I've got one, I couldn't recommend "classic"-style
furniture anymore.  We've got one big, blocklike comfy-chair, and it serves
as the official cat scratching post (and weasel hideaway).
