This weekend I took my babies to the park for about an hour. After their wild adventure I always take them and their pet taxi straight to the bathroom and throw them straight into the bath tub. I also clean out their pet taxi with Mr. Clean and Lysol, and I wash their blankets and vacuum the carpet in my bedroom where they stay most of the time. After I take them to the park and give them a bath I clean their ears. I cleaned one's ears with a Q-tip as usual and found extremely tiny clear-white bugs crawling on the Q-tip. They had some horizontal brown stipes or it could have just been segments. Are these what ear mites look like? Can people get ear mites from their ferrets? Also, I read through the Ferret FAQ, and I noticed that in one place it said to use 1mg/kg Ivermectin and split that between two ears but in another place to split .5mg/kg between two ears. I was wondering which one is more accurate. I'm trying to get a hold of a vet now so I can get them started on some ear mite medicine. PLEASE check your ferrets for ear mites! I just about had a heart attack when I saw those nasty little bugs and knew they were crawling around in my baby's ears. I was also wondering if cleaning the ears with hydrogen peroxide, vasoline, or whatever can actually cause the mites to go further down into the ear canal. Anon [Posted in FML issue 0935]
