The department of Fish and Game and The Domestic Ferret Association have created FURO- The Ferret Underground Railroad Out (I think that is what FURO stands for...). FURO was created because people (& CDFA) felt it wasn't right to have ferrets killed if found in state. They are re located out of state by this group. So- if caught and up to date on distemper and rabies shots (you must have proof) they will not be killed. Without the shots F&G can kill them. In most cases the owner is given 24 hours to get the ferret out of state, you will be asked to show proof that the ferret _is_ out of state. The law _is_ enforced, but only by F&G, most others couldn't care less. It is _not_ illegal to treat ferrets in California, and most vets records are safe, mainly because F&G just doesn't have the man-power to chase after tons of ferrets. (Good thing, too!) :> [Posted in FML issue 0825]
