Suddenly all these questions about what is and is not a Ferret-Free Zone... and requests to repost things that were in issues someone missed... OK, to all you folks new or relatively new to the Ferret Mailing List -- at the beginning of each issue of the FML are instructions on how to obtain back issues of the FML from the CUNY listserver. In addition, the listserve also offers a copy of the STAR*Ferret database, which is a comprehensive list of ferret clubs, organizations, breeders, vets, services and suppliers compiled by Pam Grant. This is also well worth obtaining! I suggest trying it out -- it's very fast and easy to obtain back issues this way, where many, many questions have been answered before. This is not a flame, mind you, but a request that readers take advantage of the resources available to us! In addition, to any CompuServe readers -- the FML issues from the past 3 years, as well as the STAR* database, are available for download from Library 11/Small Mammals library of the Pets/Animals Forum (GO PETSFORUM). Any CIS folks who have trouble downloading these files are welcome to contact me, and I'll be happy to assist! Now, to the subject of my post: Ferret-Free Zones, or FFZs -- I'm not aware of any *comprehensive* list of FFZs, and as part of Matt's suggestion of banding together (not banning, please! ferrets are already banned in too many places :-), below is a list of all FFZs that I know of, and I would urge FML readers to add to it, in an effort to get a better list together! In addition, legal action or disinformation campaigns are always popping up. Also, people frequently are asking where permits or licenses are required to keep ferrets. I've listed below what I know of, or have heard of. Let's put our heads together and update this list, which we can then have available for all who ask. --------------------- Ferrets are currently known to be banned or illegal in: California Massachusetts Michigan Hawaii New York City, NY Washington, DC St. Paul, Minn. Salt Lake City, Utah There are various cities in Texas where ferrets are illegal -- could you Texas folk apprise us of the names? I've heard that ferrets are illegal in Baltimore, Md. -- can anyone confirm? Many military bases ban ferrets -- can we get some names here? Places where legal action or disinformation campaigns concerning ferrets is taking place: New Hampshire Cobb County, Georgia Kansas Places where legal action recently took place: Pennsylvania Places where permits or licenses are required in order to own ferrets: New York State New Jersey --------------------- Please add to this list! Rather than post to the FML, please e-mail me, and I'll compile and post the summary. I can be reached at [log in to unmask] or on CompuServe at 71257,3153 Looking forward to hearing from you!! --------------------- Katie Fritz CompuServe Small Mammals Section (S11) Co-Leader, Pets/Animals Forum Internet: [log in to unmask] CompuServe: 71257,3153 [Posted in FML issue 0786]
