Rachael, Grendel, our oldest ferret, is a pepermint fiend. He can find a piece of mint candy anywhere and he gets pretty rabid about his minty treasures too (if we try to take it away from him, either to unwrap the piece of candy and give it back or to give him a smaller chunk, he'll hiss and thrash wildly). The most amusing thing about his addiction though is that he tries to hide it. He'll find a piece of candy and run under the bed with it. He's not too sly about it...making a lot of noise unwrapping and chomping what's usually a piece of hard candy. Since this usually happens in the middle of the night, I'm dead asleep and can't rouse myself to supervise much more than to yell out "Grendel, are you being bad?" At which point he stops eating and runs up onto the bed to show me he was being good ("Uh, me? I wasn't doing anything. See!") The problem is, he'll exhale on to my face. Nothing like cool minty breath to give a rascally weasel away. Oddly enough (but then again, aren't ferrets always odd?) Gilbert and Boomer think pepermint is ok (I sometimes get extra kisses from Gilbert after brushing my teeth) but Miss Lily acts as if it were poison.
