Same rule of thumb you'd use for humans and small children. Soap and
water is darned safe (humans bathe in it) especially if you rinse it.
Same with dishsoap (for hand washing, not dishwashers) and shampoo.
(All of which are options for cleaning animal stuff or kid's stuff, of
course, with a rinse).
 
To be safest and nicest to yourself and your carpet sharks, you might
want to look for a NONTOXIC biodegradable cleaning solution. You can
find such things at Trader Joes stores if you have them, or at health
food stores. I don't know if the supermarkets carry them yet. Of
course, I'd still rinse it off. We use ours to wash almost everything
in the house nowadays - no need to introduce more nasty chemicals to
our own space.
