Beau: Thanks for Linda Harrah's number. My wife and I spoke to her at length today and she put us in touch with some area people who want to get a club/rescue going. Linda was pleasantly surprised to learn of our mailing list and gave her okay for me to provide the ferret-list with any interesting info she I get through her. So a Cincinnati area ferret club should be forming soon. Other Stuff Linda Told Us: 1) ferrets are verboten in Franklin County, Ohio. Franklin county is home of Columbus, Oh (the state capitol) and Ohio State University (with one of the country's leading Veternary programs). Apparently some county health department official has it in for ferrets ans there's just no resoning with this person. Imagine attending this Vet school and not being able to study ferrets because they happen to be illegal in your one county out of the whole state!! 2) Moorehead College (west virginia ??) has ferrets as part of their vet curriculum. 3) Now that we have our rabies vaccine, the next step is to get research done on a quarentine period. This is the period the animal must be held to determine if it is indeed rabid. Currently, the animals are apparently just destroyed, with questions being asked later. The sad part, is that only about $17,000 dollars has been raised over the years for this purpose. It is estimated that there are some 6 million ferrets out there, and if each owner shelled out a measely dollar per ferret there'd be no problem funding this kind of (IMPORTANT) research. Linda said that the Llama people have raised over one hundred thousand dollars for theri cause. The Lllama people?!? How many llamas have you met recently? 4) Did I mention it was a long conversation? :-) lenny. -- Leonard A.
