Melatonin is a very ancient hormone which the body itself makes in DARKNESS (but does not make much in dimness) and it served MANY useful functions in many parts of the body. Melatonin can cause fur growth not only by helping with some types of adrenal neoplasia but also because it has a DIRECT effect on fur regrowth itself through dermal skin follicle actions, so a ferret can have one of the more serious forms of adrenal growth like lymphoma there or carcinoma there and Suprelorin can slow those while melatonin is unlikely to do so but melatonin can cause the fur to regrow. On the other hand BOTH med types work with the MOST COMMON type of adrenal growth: benign adrenal neoplasia, and used together they work even better since they use different mechanisms. ALL should remember, too, that even though most of these growths are benign they still can have very serious consequences when people do not treat them: they can change to become malignant, they can cause fatal anemia, they can cause fatal urinary blockage, they can endanger the Vena Cava and the liver, they can cause muscle loss, being ill for ferrets can increase the risk of ulcers, etc. so they NEED to be treated!
