Cupcake was surrendered to the Washington Metro Area Ferret Outreach <http://www.WMAFO.org> because she had been sick for two weeks. Her owner could afford a luxury car, but not vet care. She wasn't just sick -- she was almost dead -- literally skin and bones, couldn't even pick up her head and was just hours from dying. She weighed only 330 grams -- that's about a half a pound. Cupcake went directly into ICU where she spent the next five days. The vet couldn't even get blood from her until she had been on fluids for 24 hours. After diagnostic tests were done, Cupcake was put on a course of antibiotics and hand fed every three hours. Cupcake began to show significant signs of improvement after a week. Within a month, her weight had doubled. She now weighs a whopping 770 grams and has just been adopted into her new, forever home with her brand new friends, Daryl and Scooter. Cupcake got a second chance partly due to S.O.S. donations, which helped to "take the sting out of the vet bill," says one of the WMAFO shelter ops. "We are very thankful for their assistance."
