Yuko Akiyama, an AFA Licensed Specialty Judge for the Japan Ferret Association (JFA) visited the U.S. for her first time in March to attend AFA's Spring Nationals Ferret Competition. Yuko wanted to learn more about AFA's Specialty and Title class judging and figured the trip could serve two fold. First to pick up any new AFA rules and regulations concerning judging ferrets and second to raise some much needed funds for Japan Disaster Relief following the devastating disaster her country suffered just days before her trip. Yuko brought many hand-made Japanese ferrety items to the show. Several items were placed in a silent auction and others were sold for monetary donations. Once the raffles were closed and all the dollars were counted, AFA show goers raised $1400 for Japan Disaster Relief. Not only Yuko but many JFA members were very surprised and impressed with the outpouring of support from the show attendees. Yuko sent the funds to the Japanese Red Cross Society when she returned to Japan. June update: Yuko will be coming back to visit one of AFA's fall shows. She will be bringing more items with her in order to raise more money for Japan Disaster Relief. Once I know which show I will post it here so those who want to help the people of Japan can do so.
