Apparently Kathy Jordan is unaware that reputable ferret breeders, AFA and otherwise, don't require an Open House Day when visitors are allowed as they welcome visitors by appointment at any time. Since pregnant jills close to whelping and those who are nursing kits are kept in a separate area from the rest of the ferretry, there is no need to restrict visitors when there are young kits. Also, from even her own accounts of the way her ferrets are kept, they are in far more danger from disease and infection due to their living condisitons than they could possibly be from any visitors. I am sure the AFA breeders would be happy to allow her to visit their ferretries and discuss with her all the things she clearly needs to learn: adequate housing and care of ferrets, correct breeding and why those with genetic defects should not be used for breeding, questionnaires for prospective buyers, the necessity for tracking kits and keeping complete health records on all ferrets, what should be included in sales agreements (including health/temperament guarantees), the importance of accurate pedigrees, as well as the necessity for ADV testing. I'm sure there are many more things that Kathy needs to learn from reputable and ethical breeders, but those would do for a start. [Posted in FML 6811]
