Jacci: While I don't have any experience w/ lung cancer in ferrets, I *did* have 3 ferrets who died in very quick succession last yr, all from one or another form of cancer. So while I can't help w/ this situation w/ Kira, perhaps there is something you can do to find out why it *might* have happened. When I lost my 3 ferrets to cancers, my vet suggested we have our home checked for radon gas. He acknowledged that high concentrations of radon is known to be associated w/ lung cancer, & none of mine had that, it might be an idea to get the house checked, anyway, just to find out. All I had to do was call our local health dept - they sent someone over w/ a radon test, he put it in the basement, gave me instructions (keep the door closed for a wk as much as possible), & he'd come back in a wk to pick it up & send it out. Doesn't cost anything, & we got the results back w/in a couple wks (no radon problem here, thankfully). While I don't have a copy of the research that says radon can cause lung cancer in pets, my vet told me that was the case, & he's very good - so I trust him completely. Again, this won't solve poor Kira's problem, but it might give you some info that could be useful to you in the future. Good luck w/ your baby. You are both in my thoughts.
