If your infestation is as bad as it sounds, I would get rid of the
carpeting. If you don't want to do that, call an exterminator and ask
which pesticide they use. I did substantial research on pesticides when
I had bedbugs. I was more afraid of the pesticides harming my ferret
than the bugs biting me. What I did to be on the safe side was leave
my apartment with my ferret when the exterminator came. I stayed at a
friend's for 2 days because it was very humid, so the stuff doesn't
dry as quickly (though techinically it's supposed to dry in 8 hours,
somewhat more when humid).

Since you have a separate room for the ferrets, you could probably have
an exterminator come and it would be no problem. Just put something
under the door of the ferrets room if there is any space so the spray
doesn't drift in.

With most of the pesticides used today, once they dry, they are safe
for ferrets and other pets. I always gave it more time than the
exterminator said, just to be on the safe side.

Good luck. What a nasty problem.
