Mike, I have permission to repost this information on other sites: Here is the ingredient list for FERRETONE ( Liquid ) SOYBEAN OIL Soybean oil is a vegtable oil and it is unknown if a ferret can digest it ( as ferrets cannot digest vegtables or fruit ) it would act as a natural lax ............................. COD LIVER OIL Cod liver oil is a rich fish oil it is very high in VIT A and Vit D and should be used with care. often in the pet food industry a cheaper form of codliver oil is used and the vit a and d has been extracted and synthetic vits A and D are then added to the mix ( as seems to be the case in this instance as they are repeated ) These products should be avoided as synthetic A and D in oils can turn toxic ................................................................. LECITHIN Lecthin is an emulsifier that prevents foods from seperating once mixed ( oils or kibbles or butter for example ) it can be found in egg yolks plants and animal tissues ......................................... WHEAT GERM OIL Wheat germ oil is extracted from the germ of the the wheat kernel it is high in Vit E but this is also stripped from lower grade oils as wheat germ oil is very expensive and a synthetic vit e is added in its place it is also a grain oil, so it is unknown if a ferret could digest, it would also act as a lax .................................... VIT A SUPPLIMENT Powdered vit A ............................... VIT D SUPPLIMENT Powdered Vit D ......................... VIT E Suppliment Powdered vit E ............................ PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE This can also be called vit b6 it helps in balancing sodium and potassium in the body along with promoting red cell growth ( normally found in meat and milk ) .................................. BIOTIN This is also known as vit H or B7 it helps metabolise fatty acids .............................. MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES Simply put these are fats they are made from oil normally soybean sunflower or palm oil they act as emulsifyers ( provide a constant texture and prevent seperation) as most of these are vegtable oils it is unknown if a ferret can digest them these would also act as lax ............................................ BHT This a food addative an E number ( E321) It is used in various things cosmetics , jet fuel, petroleum products and even embalming fluid! there has been some controversy surrounding BHT and many food manifacturers have volentary stopped using it in there products as it has been linked to hyperactivity and some forms of cancer ............................................ PROPYL PARABEN This a preservative normally used in cosmetics and a few foods it most common usage is in cosmetics , shampoos and bath products ............................................ Most of the digestable oil in this product comes from the cod liver oil ( as its unknown if a ferret can actually absorb the other oils ). Foot Note: Mention of reactions to synthetic vits added in cod liver oil was also posted in a medical paper for humans, see below: Warning: Many brands of cod liver oil are processed to remove all the vitamins A and D and then have synthetic vitamins A and D added back in. These products should be completely avoided as the synthetic versions of A and D are toxic. For those living in Canada or overseas, where our recommended brands are not available, be sure to contact the manufacturer and inquire whether the A and D in their cod liver oil is naturally occurring or synthetic. ___ I recommend that you not feed more than it says, however I personally only used this once a week for trimming nails. Even so, I prefer natural Salmon Oil to Ferretone or Ferrevite. Please use this ingredient list and explanations as a guideline to help you determine if you wish to keep feeding it and how often. There are recipes out there to make your own "ferretone", if you'd like that information I can certainly reference that information for you. I hope this ingredient list gives the information you need. -- Christina Pertz [log in to unmask] http://christina.pertz.googlepages.com http://pearspalette.etsy.com [Posted in FML 6475]
