About the ferret being in a birdcage:

In the scene just before the teakettle, you can see the birdcage up on
a top shelf nearby. The characters would probably just grab the nearest
cage at hand because ferret wrestling can be less than fun for a
newcomer. They probably kept it there because, since this place is in
the middle of nowhere, there weren't any Petcos around for them to buy
a new cage. (Although one does wonder, if the place was crawling with
ferrets from impossible wishes, if the previous inhabitants had some
kind of cages to keep them in. Can you imagine losing a ferret in that
huge place? You'd never find him.)

Hopefully, the show's prop guys will get the ferret a real cage later
on in the series. Besides, that birdcage was in Warehouse 13 for a
reason -- who knows what bizarre and/or nefarious qualities it may
possess?
