Is interesting what a ferret will tell you about their past over time and how they change. Peekaboo did not have a good past. She was not treated very well and this came out where she would offer to bite me but only when I was attempting to give her a little TLC. I could tell she was not a biter but was acting only in a defense effort. The shelter that so graciously transported her to me treated her with the utmost of kindness and care but prior the SPCA only had her in a cage 24x7 for over a year, prior to that she must of had owners that were other than kind. Pester was just a very confused little girl. She was treated ok, but was never handled much. Both have come to know who I am and that they are far more than safe here with me. I open the cage to clean or just pet them, Peekaboo will actually leap out to my arms and is more than happy to just lay in my arms and be carried around. Quite a reverse from the beginning where she would cower and offer to 'chew' on me to ward me off. Just the total opposite now. Lots of kisses from both of them now and they pace back and forth 'asking' for a little attention. I have said many times before, if you take the time to learn their language they will tell you so many stories good and bad. RePete was trying to tell me something the night before he died by getting behind me as I lay in bed and was licking my back all over and over. There was something wrong and he was 'asking' me for help. But I didn't know what he was saying till it was too late. Byte-me told me of here 'time', I knew that day she would pass before I got home and told people I worked with what I feared to find when I got home, I was correct. She was laying exactly where I had set her down in the hammy exactly as I put her there. I still deeply grieve the loss of that little animal. And so it goes, another day, another lay off.
