regarding home testing glucometers. http://avmajournals.avma.org/doi/abs/10.2460/ajvr.2000.61.1587 All human meters have to meet testing standards and will all be between 10-20 points below what the number really is on ferrets. Note that animal glucometers are not required to meet any standards of accuracy and in testing run high, so a very low BG might indeed be lower than the meter says and a big concern for hypoglycemia. Pippin is diabetic and I have had good success using the Contour Meter by Bayer, they will send you a free one if you ask as will most manufacturers. What ever meter you decide to go with stay with the same one for the most accuracy in fluctuations of readings. It is a good idea to take yours when you go to the vet, so a comparison with your meter and his meter on the same blood sample so you know how to adjust for accuracy at home. [Posted in FML 6260]
