Views regarding food can and do change, sometimes after a catastrophic event, sometimes after a bit of experimentation, sometimes after a bit of enlightenment. Some people's views never change. A good example is the potato. http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/PotatoHistory.htm Originally a staple for the peoples of Peru and Chile and even worshipped by the Incas then brought to Europe by exploring Spaniards. The Potato was thought to be poisonous, evil and the cause of many diseases rampant in the countryside at the time: Leprosy, Syphilis and even sterility! Many people in France, Belgium and England willingly starved to death rather than eat the evil spud! Kings tried to encourage their subjects to eat the potato but could not get the people to break away from their meat and bread regimen. It took a few centuries, from 1565 A.D. to 1785, for people to begin to look at the potato as a viable source of nutrients and a beneficial food crop! In the 1800s most Americans were only using the potato as food for pigs! Now it is a major food crop and considered a beneficial food. But it took centuries for so called advanced people to accept what indigenous and native peoples already knew! Peoples minds can change and its o.k. to do so! Whether people feed kibble or a natural prey model diet to their ferret, will always be their choice, I've never said anything different. But what the ferret evolved to eat was certainly NOT vegetation - OR the potato! Interestingly, all the while these people were avoiding eating the potato - they were also breeding and using ferrets to hunt rabbits and keep their grain crops free of rodents! Hmmm - now isn't THAT food for thought? Cheers, Kim [Posted in FML 6242]
