I'm sure she meant this as a rhetorical question, but I'll answer it
anyway, because I think it's relevant.

The traditional diet for working ferrets (rabbit hunters) in the UK
was bread soaked in milk.

I'm not saying it was a good diet. It was abysmal, and I imagine it
often resulted in long-term malnutrition. But it does show that such
a thing is possible; that ferrets are not actually poisoned by food
not suitable for an obligate carnivore.
