I wasn't sure if someone was already posting this on the FML, but I can't believe this! :( http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/unleashed/current_affairs/ Scroll to the ferret plague. What a shame. While not the same situation and pretty much unrelated, it reminds me of the meerkat project in South Africa. The researchers euthanize any meerkats who get TB, so as to not have all of them die, their reasoning that it's a man-introduced disease. But - they're interfering with evolution. I'm sorry, but TB will be around for years to come, probably forever - we can't keep acting like we can eradicate illnesses. We can't. So each time they euthanize meerkats, they just might be euthanizing the one lucky one would have struggled through, survived, and passed his genes on to the next generation, hopefully a little stronger. I realize they want to avoid extinction - but to me it seems haphazard. I do not know what I would do if I was there. I hope the ferrets can fight off the plague and come out stronger. What an Earth this is with such fragile animals and ecosystems. :( Laryssa [Posted in FML 6049]
