As I'm sure everyone knows, there are 65 re-surrendered DMK ferrets back in Ohio right now at Lori's. These kids have all been spayed/neutered and vaccinated. They have NOT been ADV tested. Since the holidays are upon us and lots of people will be traveling by car, if you can give a ferret a ride, please contact me with TRANSPORTATION in the subject line. We have someone who is driving from CT to Salt Lake City for Christmas and has agreed to make some room in her car for traveling McKids. We have had requests to adopt McKids from Chicago, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas and Florida and are looking for transportation for them as well. Some of the volunteers have agreed to do short "jaunts" in and around the state of Ohio for adopters too. If you have room in your heart and home for another kid or two, please email me with ADOPTION and please put your state abbreviation after the word adoption, i.e. ADOPTION - TN. We had 17 adoptions set up for York this weekend, but unfortunately Lori became ill and couldn't make the drive. So anyone traveling from the Ohio area back to the east coast -- these same ferrets could still use a ride!!! I know there has been a lot of "discussion" amongst the ferret community regarding certain facets of the rescue, but PLEASE, these McKids have nothing to do with our human disagreements -- they are living, breathing, loving creatures that need somewhere to call home. THEY DESERVE THAT. We also have a need for carriers to transport them in. The last rescue wiped out almost every single carrier Lori had. So, if you've got some extra carriers, please email me with CARRIERS and your state abbreviation so we can begin to coordinate getting them to Ohio, if possible. If you would like to send carriers to Lori's, email me and I will provide you with her mailing address. Potential adopters should know that these ferrets have not really been socialized. Some are totally manner-less and need a few weeks or months at charm school, to say the least. Some are very well mannered for a McKid and have very few issues with humans. All need time to get their ya ya's out in the playpen before their attention span kicks in. We will be unable to accommodate color requests or gender requests (please note that the majority of these ferrets are females) although, if someone wants to adopt but has to have a male (for example) because their female won't tolerate any other females, we will TRY to honor that because that means a ferret gets a home. If, like me, you just personally prefer big fat boys, we probably can't do that. One thing I've learned from this rescue is that it would have been IMPOSSIBLE if not for everyone pulling together. To all those people that stepped up to help out, thank you from all of the Mckay kids out there who finally know what it's like to be loved. For those shelters that took in McKids from the last rescue, Renee sent me this info regarding Petsmart Charities and their spay/neuter program. Check it out to see if you QUALIFY FOR GRANT MONIES TO COVER YOUR MCKID SPAY AND NEUTERS: Go to <http://www.petsmartcharities.org/animal-welfare/grant_app_categories.php#fasttracksn> and click on Fast Track Pre-Adoption Spay/Neuter Grant Application Form to get the pdf application. There is a checklist to see what you need to do to qualify. [Posted in FML 5817]
