I posted this on the FHL, but I know there's a lot of experience and great advice here too. So forgive me, if you're on both lists, for the crosspost. Thanks in advance for any and all help. ------------------------------- I have a 3.5 yr old, 3.1 lb male ferret who just had a 2nd partial pancreatectomy within 1.5 yrs. His blood sugar has been in the mid 20's while on pred (1cc 2x a day) and (.2 cc) diazoxide. Before surgery he was started on IV fluids for over 15 hours; this morning his BG reading was over 300, so the dextrose was reduced from 5% to 2.5% after which being in surgery for 1.5 hrs his BG dropped back down into the 30's. Post surgery 5 hours + his BG remains in the 30's with dextrose increased (I failed to ask at what percent). Surgery found no obvious nodules on the pancreas or liver (liver was smooth). His omentum had the most fat the vet had ever seen and his spleen was the smallest spleen she has ever seen in a ferret. Does anyone have any ideas as to why his BG readings would be so all over the map but yet no obvious nodules were found? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. This poor dude has no quality of life and it looks like this 2nd surgery was a failure. I don't know where to go from here. ---- Just a quick update from this morning (11/01), his BG remains all over the place from 400's back down to the 30's. He's bruising where blood is being drawn and he seems to have no appetite. [Posted in FML 5779]
