Since the first post appeared on the FML regarding the Ohio Rescue, I have been reading emails, answering emails, arranging transport for rescue ferrets, coordinating with vet, etc. During this entire time, my brain has been racing in many directions with so much needing to be done both here in MA and in OH. However, I have had a couple of thoughts that I would like to share with others - If each of the 48 states were to take in ferrets, they would only need to take in 17 3/4 ferrets per state. If there is more than one shelter per state, than these 17 3/4 ferrets would be dispersed amongst those shelters. This would result in a lesser burden for each shelter. However, this is what could happen in the perfect "Walgreen's" world. Perhaps this is a pipe dream or perhaps not. Due to the magnitude of this rescue, I believe we will have to go outside the ferret community for donations. In addition to supporting MaFF, many of our members support several dog/cat shelters through small donations and I have people contacting these shelters for donations. I am reminding people that this rescue is going to require donations from all pet lovers, not just ferret lovers. One of our members, who is 13 years old, called me to let me know that she and 3 friends made hammies for the ferrets in their sewing class. She was embarrassed to say that the seams aren't straight and they aren't perfect. I reminded her that the ferrets won't mind as they have never had any hammie to snuggle in, so these will be just fine. She is also waiting for permission from the Director of the school for permission to have a Penny War. Each class collects money for a specified time and the class collecting the most money wins a "Dress Down Day" or Ice Cream Party. I can't tell you how proud I am of her efforts to help out. She also handed me $5 of her own money to give Lori for the ferrets. Finally I would like to thank the person who posted humorous suggestions for relieving stress. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that post. You sure made me smile and hope to see more suggestions like these. Phyllis Spy President, MaFF [Posted in FML 5743]
