Here's something I can tell everyone on this subject.

These costs usually include the care the vet techs give you kids as
they wake up AFTER sugery. If you can talk your vet into letting you
stay during the surgery so YOU can keep an eye on your kids and help
them wake up it should cut down on the cost of the spay and/or neuter.
This is what I do everytime one of my kids has surgery.

Don't hessitate to ask your vet if they are willing to do this with you
as you may be pleasently suprised.
